This Week on Noir and Chick Flicks:



This weeks Chick Flicks at the Movies: The Big Combo(1955). This violent, dark film tells of tormented Police Lt. Leonard Diamond (Cornel Wilde), who is on a personal crusade to bring down sadistic gangster Mr. Brown (Richard Conte). He's also dangerously obsessed with Brown's girlfriend (Jean Wallace, pictured above), his captive lover. Click picture on side bar to view movie.


ON TCM: July 10, 2010. Movies filmed in Monument Valley.John Ford filmed several movies in Monument Valley, Utah. Stagecoach (1929), My Darling Clementine (1946), Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Wagon Master (1950), Rio Grande (1950), The Searchers (1956), Sergeant Rutledge (1960) and his last western, Cheyenne Autumn (1964). ON TCM: Sunday, July 11, 2010. SPEEDY (1928). Click picture located on side bar to read movie review of the silent film: Speedy (1928). A silent film that was one of the films to be nominated for the short-lived Academy Award for Best Director of a Comedy. It starred famous comedian Harold Lloyd in the eponymous leading role, and it was his last silent film to be released in theatres. The film was written by Albert DeMond (titles), John Grey (story), J.A. Howe (story), Lex Neal (story), and Howard Emmett Rogers (story) with uncredited assistance from Al Boasberg and Paul Girard Smith. It was directed by Ted Wilde (the last silent film to be directed by him). It was shot on location in New York City.


ON TCM: Thurs. July 13, 2010. Designing Women (1957). Designing Woman (1957). A romantic comedy about fashion. Vincente Minnelli directed stars Lauren Bacall and Gregory Peck. George Wells won an Academy Award for the screenplay.

B.F.'s Daughter (1948). A professor doesn't know his wife is an heiress. Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Charles Coburn. Dir: Robert Z. Leonard.

To Please A Lady (1950). A ruthless race-car driver falls for a crusading journalist out to clean up the sport. Cast: Clark Gable, Barbara Stanwyck, Adolphe Menjou. Dir: Clarence Brown.

Man With A Cloak, The (1951). A mystery man tries to help a young innocent escape a murderous housekeeper. Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Joseph Cotten, Leslie Caron. Dir: Fletcher Markle.

Jeopardy (1953). A woman desperately seeks help to prevent her trapped husband from drowning. Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Barry Sullivan, Ralph Meeker. Dir: John Sturges.
