This Week on N and CF.


Featured this week on "Chick flicks at the Movies", is the movie: The Strange Love of Martha Ivers(1946). A black-and-white film noir. Cast: Barbara Stanwyck( pictured above), Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott and Kirk Douglas (pictured above)in his film debut. The movie is based on the short story "Love Lies Bleeding" by playwright John Patrick and directed by Lewis Milestone.

Happy Birthday: Doris Day( April 3, 1922), she is actress and singer, and an outspoken animal rights activist since her retirement from show business. Her entertainment career began in the 1940s as a big band singer. In 1945 she had her first hit recording, "Sentimental Journey". In 1948, she performed in her first and my favorite Doris Day film, Romance on the High Seas. During her entertainment career, she performed in 39 films, recorded more than 650 songs, received an Academy Award nomination, won a Golden Globe and a Grammy Award, and, in 1989, received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures.

ON TCM, April 5, 2011: She married Her Boss(1935). A super-efficient secretary at a department store falls for and marries her boss, but finds out that taking care of him at home (and especially his spoiled-brat daughter) is a lot different than taking care of him at work.

Happy Birthday: Gregory Peck.(April 5, 1916 – June 12, 2003). One of 20th Century Fox's most popular film stars from the 1940s to the 1960s, Peck continued to play important roles well into the 1980s. His best known performance was, Atticus Finch in the 1962 film To Kill a Mockingbird, for which he won his Academy Award.

Happy Birthday: Bette Davis. (April 5, 1908 – October 6, 1989) was an American actress of film, television and theater. Noted for her willingness to play unsympathetic characters, she was highly regarded for her performances in a range of film genres; from contemporary crime melodramas to historical and period films and occasional comedies, though her greatest successes were her roles in romantic dramas.

Happy Birthday: Spencer Tracy.(April 5, 1900 – June 10, 1967) was an American theatrical and film actor, who appeared in 75 films from 1930 to 1967. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Tracy ninth among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time. He was nominated for nine Academy Awards for Best Actor in all, winning two.

On TCM, April 6, 2011: Dancing Lady (1933). Musical film starring Joan Crawford, Clark Gable and featuring Franchot Tone, the fourth of eight collaborations between Crawford and Gable. It was directed by Robert Z. Leonard, produced by John W. Considine Jr. and David O. Selznick, and was based on the novel of the same name by James Warner Bellah, published the previous year. The movie had a hit song in "Everything I Have Is Yours," by Burton Lane and Harold Adamson.

BEWARE OF THESE WOMEN! FESTIVAL April 1st - 30th. We all know her the woman we love to hate, but secretly admire for her lack of tact, compassion, or both. For the month of April, ALL GOOD THINGS, NOIR and CHICK FLICKS, AND THEN THEY START TO SPARKLE, will share some of our classic favorite "bad girls" with you.
